San
Diego City Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez has been a national
gay Latino activist for over 40 years. She is the only activist
that has served on the national boards of ALL the March on Washington
for GLBT rights, including being the National Co-Chair of the
Millennium March on Washington. City Commissioner Ramirez has
served the last five mayors of San Diego, and was elected the
chair of the first mayor's GLBT Advisory Board, and the first
GLBT Advisory Board to the chief of police. City Commissioner
Ramirez was elected chair of the San Diego Human Relations Commission
for an unprecedented fourth term, and the first openly gay man
elected as chair. The Human Relations Commission comprises leaders
from the religious, people of color and Native American communities
appointed by the Mayor and the city Council. Nicole is a past
state chair of Equality California, and currently sits on the
Board of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF).
Nicole was also elected national co-chair of the 25th Anniversary
Celebration of Stonewall and the International March on the
United Nations (Stonewall 25). Nicole is a past national chair
of Llego, the national Latino organization in Washington DC,
and is a past national board member of the Human Rights Campaign
(HRC). Nicole Murray Ramirez has been a keynote speaker at three
regional Black/Brown Summits, bringing together GLBT African
American and Latino activists from throughout the nation.
Nicole
Murray Ramirez is the reigning "Queen Mother" of the
Americas, the titular leader of the International Court System
of the United States, Canada and Mexico, with over 68 chapters
within these three nations. This philanthropic organization
was founded in 1961.
Nicole
Murray Ramirez was a leading activist against Anita Bryant's
"Save the Children" campaign and the Briggs Initiative.
Nicole was a god friend of Harvey Milk and is in fact a character
in the play "Dear Harvey". Nicole was a pre-operative
transsexual for five years, and now considers herself a gay
man who at times does drag. City Commissioner Ramirez founded
numerous AIDS organizations and was honored at the French Embassy
in Washington DC for his leadership work on AIDS/HIV, and was
appointed by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to the
Regional Task Force on AIDS, and has also served as a County
Deputy Marriage Commissioner and had the honor of marrying many
gay couple in California.
During
his long leadership/activist career, Nicole Murray Ramirez has
met and worked with Presidents, Governors, Senators, etc. and
has been honored by many public officials including being named
an "Honorary Texan" by the late Governor Ann Richards.
Nicole has received the "key to the city" of San Diego,
Portland OR, and Surrey BC in Canada. Among the countless honors
and awards received were the Cesar Chavez Humanitarian Award
presented by Chavez's widow, Helen Chavez; a Lifetime Achievement
Award presented by the Latino Unity Coalition; and the 1986
Harvey Milk Award in Los Angeles.
Nicole
Murray Ramirez founded the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast in
San Diego County, which inaugural event drew over 90 attendees.
