His work has garnered many awards, and been recognized locally and nationally. As a cultural specialist, he has traveled throughout the islands, nationally and internationally to teach and present traditional and contemporary Hawaiian artisanship. For decades he has been an energetic supporter of projects in the gay community in Hawai'i, from fundraisers for service agencies and scholarships to promoting Gay Pride events in Honolulu.
