Karina
has supported many organizations in the GLBT community
of Los Angeles County. Karina was honored with the
"Mother Earth" award from Orange County
and in 1997, the "Reflections Humanitarian Award
In 2000" ("Reflections" is a straight
community organization that gives a yearly award to
individuals of the Asian community for outstanding
work).
For
many years Karina has assisted and helped organize
fundraising efforts for such organizations as Silverlake's
"Gary Bond Memorial Assistance Fund", the
"Christ Chapel Food Bank of Long Beach",
"St. John's Food Cup Board and Well Child Center"
and the "Greater Pasadena Aids Foundation".
Karina established the "The Nicole Murray
Ramirez Scholarship Fund", which offers yearly
scholarships to various educational institutions.
The fund distributes scholarships to students without
partiality to gender, ethnicity, sexual preference
or lifestyle.
She
was the recipient of the "Jose' Honors Award"
in 2001 and the "40 Noble Deeds Award" in
2005. She was the recipient of the Christopher Street
West Pride's 2006 "Connie Norman Award"
that recognizes an individual for outstanding achievement
in fostering racial, ethnic, religious and gender
unity within the LGBT community.
In
2006 Karina received the first award given to a transgender
by The Gay and Lesbian Center of Los Angeles for her
outstanding work in the intervention and prevention
of HIV in the GLBT community.
"The Karina Samala Transgender Trailblazer Award"
is now an annual award.
She
is a member of the National Center for Transgender
Equality, West Hollywood Transgender Task Force and
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's GLBT Advisory Council.
Karina
is proud of being elected Empress 23, 24, and 30 of
the Imperial Court of Los Angeles & Hollywood
and currently the President of the Board of Directors.
