1986 – Immigrated from Dublin Ireland to Vancouver Canada
1989 – Diagnosed HIV Positive

1996 Moved to Surrey a suburb of Vancouver that had no open GLBTQ community. In January of 1998 Martin hosted the 1st GLBTQ Dance as a fundraised for Biggots Banned Books Defense Fund. (The Surrey School Board ad banned same sex themed books in the high schools).
1999 – Martin held the 1st Surrey Pride event and raised funds for AIDS Tijuana as well as the local community. It was at this time that the first proclamation for Gay Pride was issued by the Mayor.
2000 – OIS (Out in Surrey) held the first Gay Surrey BC Pageant. During that year Martin became the Founding President of the Society.
2004 - He guided it through the Barony process and ultimately through courthood and was elected the 1st Emperor of Surrey.
All the while Martin was aware of the many fundraising needs of the community. He was very creative in how he approached fundraising even taking an enormous risk with an event called “Straight to Drag” which raised of $4,000 in one evening in the name of Breast Cancer.
Recently Martin has been actively involved in local, provincial and National Politics. Her sits on various political boards as a liaison for the GLBTQ community.
2007 – Martin was denied entry to the US as he was HIV positive. He began an initiative that involved an alliance of local provincial and Federal political leaders along with International Organizations including the ICS , ICC, Egale Canada to begin the fight to remove this ban.
2008 – Martin held a rally on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery. In September of 2008, he was awarded the 1st recipient of the International Imperial Order of the Double Eagle Award by the Queen Mother in his home court of Surrey BC.
2009 – As there was no sign of the ban being lifted he once again pulled on his alliance and held another rally at the Peace Arch in August ’09 that led to ultimate lifting of the travel ban January 2010
2010 – Martin was if not the first person in Canada or the World but certainly the first person from BC to re enter the US on January 4th, following the lifting of the ban. In February he was award the Jose 1 Medallion in Seattle for his work on lifting the travel ban.
Martin continues to be a voice for the community of Surrey, the disadvantaged due to the HIV AIDS crisis and will continue to be a voice to promote education, early testing, early diagnosis and treatment and to more importantly be the a voice to remove the stigma still associated with HIV/AIDS
