My name is Michele Korman. I am 34 years old, a female,
and I am straight. I have been involved with the Imperial
Court of Nebraska for eleven years. During that time
I have served as a board member, Grand Czarina (twice),
Princess Royale, and eventually was crowned the 26th elected
Empress.
I became involved in Reign 15 when a past Empress said,
“…you have a mouth, you should join the court
and apply to be a board member.” I took his
advice and served on the board for one year. During
that time I sold countless raffle tickets and helped behind
the scenes with different events and shows.
The following year, Empress 16, Phoenix Fallentino, asked
me to be her Grand Czarina. I accepted and continued
on with more fundraising. This time, I hosted two
of my own shows. One was in honor of Phoenix and is
still an annual event to this day. My second show
was to support the Leather Engineers of Omaha. I also
performed in several events during the reign.
The next year, I was asked by Empress 17, Sharon Van Butsel,
to serve as her Grand Czarina as well. I continued
to put on shows, perform in shows, and set up different
events. Most of my money, however, came from selling
raffle tickets at everybody’s shows. I was eventually
crowned the “raffle ticket queen.”
The next couple of years I took a break from the royal family
and became a board member again holding a two year term.
In 2000, Empress 20, Feleena Katz, asked me to be one of
her candidates as Princess Royale. At the July meeting,
I got the majority vote and was crowned in August as Princess
Royale 20.
During that year, I decided I wanted to make some changes
and raise the most money we could. There was a challenge
made for us to each raise $500. I decided I needed
to raise $5000. I’m not sure if I did, but I
came close. I averaged one fundraiser a month and
also helped the other royal family members to meet their
goals. I think my biggest accomplishment was at our
annual Food-4-Thought. The ICC came up with raising
money for caned foods and to produce a certain amount of
cans. I decided to ask the bar if they would donate
a dollar for every can of food we brought in that night.
My Empress thought I was crazy but with $1013 dollars and
the same amount in cans, she couldn’t have been happier.
Over the next several years, I took a break, however, still
stayed involved by co-chairing certain events and becoming
the show coordinator for ICON. I co-chaired Night
of 1,000 Stars which has been a huge fundraiser throughout
Nebraska for the last 13 years or so. I also chaired
hospitality during reign 24.
My biggest accomplishment during that time resulted from
a tragedy. My Prince Royale died from a brain infection
related to AIDS. He helped so many people when he
was the one who needed help. I talked to our AIDS
Project and asked them how much money it cost to take a
person off of the waiting list. They told me $10,000.
I said, “Then that’s what I have to do.”
Nobody took me seriously until I went to the board with
my proposal. I asked them if they wanted a part in
my crusade and they could count that towards reign 24.
With the help of numerous title holders I was able to present
a check for $10,000 to the University of Nebraska Medical
Center. They in return used it as a pharmacy account
for clients and renamed it “Michele’s Fund.”
To this day I along with many others continue to raise money
for this fund. Whether it be a show, a breakfast,
bingo, Jell-O shots, or carrying around a piggy bank, we
make sure the fund is always stocked. As a result
of this, I was nominated as one of the 25 Angles as Christmas
time and was featured in our newspaper.
In 2006 I finally decided it was time for me to move forward.
I ran against two female impersonators, one who was a past
Empress, and was elected the 26th Empress to the State of
Nebraska. Although my reign had many ups and downs,
my Emperor and I did manage to raise a decent amount of
money and actually broke a record with the most money raised
at Toyz-4-Totz, which is our annual fundraiser for kids
affected and infected with HIV/AIDS.
